Many variants of the scow
have been built since the early 1900s.
The original craft were of
wooden construction and produced in large numbers by numerous builders until the
late 1950s. The “Burnham Scow” was developed in 1971 along traditional lines
and several hundred were built up to the mid 80s. Many were exported to Holland
and Germany.
With the renewed
interest in these fun craft, The Riverside Boat Company, based in
Burnham-on-Crouch, Essex are in production again.
The new Burnham Scow has been designed
for the upper reaches of rivers and creeks. With improved helmsman seating
area complete with it's small twin lockers for storing small items and for
ensuring adequate built-in buoyancy for maximum safety.
Built in high quality GRP with the hull in
simulated clinker, the craft and it's component parts are still hand made and assembled on our premises, including the wooden
spars, rudder and tiller.
